A Life in Photos

On this morning six weeks ago, Max told us he had been rear ended the night before by a hit-and-run drunk driver. It crunched up the back of his car, making the trunk useless and requiring the bumper to come off so he could drive. His new-to-him, beautiful car was now junky, but he was strangely undisturbed by this. He was still filled with optimism, passion, and joy. He had so much to look forward to.

Two days later, he was struck by a semi-truck on his way home from classes.  I happened on the scene, quite coincidentally, about 5 minutes later and knew instantly that it was Max in that mangled wreck because I recognized the little red car without a bumper.

I made a Shutterfly photo album of all the photos I could find from his brief life.   Maybe one day I will find more photos in a box somewhere or in a hard drive on another computer, but for now I am exhausted.  It will have to wait for another day.

Grief is hard work.

The Only Pizza Worth Eating

The crash took Max's life but spared his laptop.  What a bitter irony.

He wrote an essay - presumably for his college writing course - that I found on the hard drive of his laptop.  He submitted it for grading just a couple of weeks before his death.  More irony.  Anyway, here it is for your reading:

Starting over

When it feels like the world has been knocked off its axis, how in the world do you start writing again in the blog that you neglected for months before tragedy struck?

I have no idea.

So I decided that I would just start with sharing some of the brief things I post on my Facebook timeline.  If you're already friends with me on Facebook, this is going to start to feel redundant, and for that, I apologize.

Aside from pizza, Max's favorite meal was eggplant parmigiana with a side of spaghetti. Four weeks ago this afternoon, I sent him a text that read, "Eggplant parm tonight. :)" His immediate reply: "YES!!"

That was the last family meal we had with him. He was late, so we started without him, and Jacob took his seat. When he arrived home, the only seat left was next to me. While the rest of the family chattered on about stuff I cannot recall, Max talked to me about his day at school and upcoming tests and deadlines, and told me funny things that happened in the student lounge.

This is my last fondest memory of him alive.

    Who's that?

Much of the blame belongs to me,  Alison.  I am:  Wife to 1 man, Mom to 10 kids, and Farmer to a great many critters.
